Donor horses were used to provide her with the blood she needed, and special padded dressings were used to protect her fragile skin from worsening pressure sores. Worms, parasites, and infections had been allowed to fester, requiring months of treatment and care before Heidi could take her first steps of freedom. But through it all, she fought.
According to Wendy, Heidi’s sheer will to live and her resilience played a huge part in her recovery. Many horses in her condition don’t survive, but Heidi had something special—an indomitable spirit. Slowly, she began to heal, gaining strength, and eventually was able to run in the fields alongside other horses. Her coat returned to its full, healthy glow, and her once-matted mane blossomed into a beautiful crown befitting her new life.
