Bruce Campbell, a retired electrical engineer, has transformed a retired Boeing 727 aircraft into his unique home, nestled in the woods near Hillsboro, Oregon.
This innovative project reflects his passion for repurposing and sustainable living. Campbell purchased the aircraft in 1999 for $100,000 and invested approximately $120,000 to transport and convert it into a livable space, totaling around $220,000 for the entire endeavor
The interior of the plane retains many of its original features, including some seating and the cockpit, which Campbell uses as a reading area. He has added essential amenities such as a futon for sleeping, a makeshift shower, a sink, and a washing machine. The aircraft’s design provides a spacious and durable living environment, with the fuselage offering over 1,000 square feet of living space.
Campbell resides in his airplane home for about six months each year, spending the remaining time in Japan, where he is exploring the possibility of creating a similar project. He often welcomes visitors to tour his unique residence, aiming to inspire others to consider alternative housing solutions.
His endeavor not only showcases creativity but also emphasizes the potential of upcycling retired aircraft into functional living spaces, promoting environmental consciousness and innovative thinking in housing design.
